We collaborate with local businesses, academic institutions, and service organizations. Together we build a stronger, more accessible Timmins.
DIY Community Health is an incorporated non-profit in Timmins, Ontario. We are a collection of community volunteers with a shared vision of an accessible and welcoming community.
We provide equitable health and social services to marginalized groups that face barriers to accessing traditional support streams — while working collaboratively throughout the community to strengthen health and social support systems.
Grounded in the principle that people are experts in their own lives, we believe that profound community change comes from creating safe opportunities for people with lived and living experience to participate fully in community.
Our Story
What’s With The Name?
DIY — Do It Yourself — refers to the idea of taking action to accomplish your goals. In this case, the goal is community development.
It does not mean Do It By Yourself.
We know that everyone belongs in our community, and that together we are stronger.
DIY Community Health grew out of a simple belief: people are the experts in their own lives. What started as a grassroots volunteer effort has grown into a vital network of outreach workers, peer supporters, and community partners — all working toward one vision: a Timmins where everyone has access to the care and support they need.
A few stats:
- 10,000+ contacts in 6 months
- 6,000+ meals served
- 8,000+ needles safely removed
- 60+ unique individuals supported

Become a Volunteer Today
You don’t need a degree, a special skill set, or a lot of time. You just need to show up.
At DIY Community Health, our volunteers are the heartbeat of everything we do. They stock the Community Fridge, walk alongside our outreach team, organize cleanups, support community events, and help build a Timmins where everyone feels like they belong.
Volunteering with DIY means making a visible, tangible difference in your own community — while gaining real-world experience in outreach, social services, harm reduction, and community organizing. You’ll connect with a passionate, welcoming team and build skills in IT, event coordination, youth engagement, and peer support. Students in Social Work, Addictions & Mental Health, and Nursing can access field placement hours.
Current roles include Community Care Team, Community Cleanups, Youth Engagement, IT Support, Awareness & Events, Project Eddie, and Fierte Timmins Pride Liaison.
No matter where you’re starting from, there’s a place for you here.
Voices From Our Community
Addictions & Mental Health Student Volunteer:
“Watching a mutual aid site develop from the ground up is a unique opportunity for me as a student Addiction & Mental Health Worker. I get to learn about outreach, marketing, and fundraising from experienced community organizers. DIY’s collaborative approach means I can support many different local events and service organizations and see how they all work together. Volunteering here has changed my perspective on Timmins by uncovering something I used to overlook: people helping people. It gives me hope for the future of my hometown.”
— Addictions & Mental Health Worker Student
IT Volunteer:
“Setting up the computers and coming up with a good public-computing solution is an example of real IT work that I’m interested in pursuing after college. I think it happened to be the perfect opportunity for me. I’ve seen some of the hate that our city generates towards homeless people and I believe that DIY is providing good services to the Timmins community.”
— IT Support Volunteer
Community & Pride Volunteer:
“I joined DIY during a time when I felt completely stuck — immigration messed up my documents, and I had to quit my job and studies. It felt like my life was on pause. Then I met Jay at Pride while he was doing crowd management. We got to talking about volunteering, and it lit something up in me. Mutual aid, to me, is about showing up for each other in real, tangible ways. Volunteering with DIY gave me structure, purpose, and community — it brought joy and momentum back into a life that had felt stalled.”
